CHAPTER TWELVE

Ratchet Pixie Informant

The fire exit swung open hard, Hemlock storming out into the alley way followed by Morgan, his boot heels clicking heavily on the pavement. The door slammed shut behind them. Hemlock began pacing the alley. She pulled a fresh piece of chalk from an inner jacket pocket. Tapping it against her lip, Hemlock kept pacing quietly.

Morgan stood by the fire door, leaning against the precinct's brick wall. He sighed, "So, what's the next move boss? Have you ever actually hunted nightmares?"

Hemlock stopped pacing. She scratched at the shorter side of her pixie cut scalp with the stick of chalk. "Not really, I went on a few jackalope hunts prior to the banishing, but they're a different animal altogether."

She knelt at a clear section of pavement with the least amount of oil staining. "We'll need a bit of research, did you bring that book Yamata lent you last night?"

Morgan reached into an inner breast pocket of his trucker jacket and pulled out the small volume of Nightmares in a Nutshell. The cover image of the crazed horse staring back at him. "Yep, don't leave home without it now."

"Good," said Hemlock. "You take a few minutes to scan through and see if there's anything we can do to lure them out. I need to call someone to us, should've asked her yesterday if she's seen anything strange or not, but we didn't have a good picture yet."

"OK," replied Morgan. He started scanning through the index for topics that might help them figure out how to lure nightmares. The L sections didn't help as it concerned mainly with living with nightmares, livery and a few other unrelated items. The T section had an entry for trapping nightmares, page fifty-four. Flipping to page fifty-four, under a bold section heading that read, "Trapping Nightmares" he found a single word, "Don't".

Flipping back to the front of the index, Morgan found under the A section a listing for attracting nightmares, page thirty-two. He found the section, Morgan read aloud, "A nightmare is a creature of constant hunger. It requires little to no nourishment for its physical form, as it is unreliably corporeal. A nightmare draws its forms as necessary from the ether. As a being of ethereal plights, it's hunger derives from the need to fuel any magical requirements to maintain or change state."

Morgan peeked up from the page. Hemlock was drawing out a circle in the chalk, with a set of runes and symbols. It didn't appear similar to the ones she had used for teleporting them around the city. "Interesting section, keep going," she said.

Morgan stared back down to the page and continued. "While other magical creatures and beings can do this with a connection to latent magical energies in their surrounding world, the nightmare has evolved a way to transform extracted negative emotion into an energy form it can store and feed on for many years between feedings. As the nightmare has evolved this method to derive energy from negative emotions,
